Get To Know Your Rowdies: Graham Tatters

Graham Tatters, born and raised in Elgin, Scotland, started playing soccer as soon as he could.  “It's one of those things you grow up doing for as long as you can remember.  I was watching games from my stroller as a baby, kicking a ball as soon as I could stand and started playing competitively when I was about eight-years-old.” Graham, also known as ‘Tatts’ to his teammates, played his whole youth career for the local Scottish Club Elgin City, accumulating numerous honors, including Elgin’s U-16 Player of the Year in 2001.

Graham’s passion for soccer led him to play for University of North Carolina at Charlotte for four years. His extensive tenure with UNC Charlotte included captain for 2007-2008 season, 2007 and 2008 team MVP and was also named A10 All Championship Team and the Davidson Adidas Classic Tournament in 2007. While in college, Graham was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin Lymphoma and underwent chemotherapy to shrink the tumor physicians found between his lungs. Five years later, Graham is cancer free and is now extremely involved with Lance Armstrong’s Foundation Live-Strong as a Global Envoy Cancer Advocate.

Tatts has played in 15 games for the Rowdies this season, including nine starts.  He recored his first assist of the season in Austin on May 19th in the 3-3 tie.

What made you choose the Rowdies?
After meeting with Paul and listening to his management style and how he wants his team to play soccer, I felt that this is where I needed to be.

What’s your typical pre-match meal?
As much pasta as I can eat the night before; light breakfast; chicken for lunch; and fruit or breakfast bar a few hours before kick off.

Any game day superstitions or traditions?
Just trying to get as much sleep as possible without it being classed as a coma.

What has been your most memorable moment involving soccer so far?
Scoring in my first game back after starting chemotherapy.  Being a defender I don’t score that often.  So, that goal really kept me going through my last year of chemo.

Growing up, what soccer team did you support?
Newcastle United. When your father is a Geordie, Newcastle is not a team you support but a religion you follow.

What career would you be pursuing if you weren’t a soccer player?
Nurse.  I know, I know the big bad soccer player wants to be a nurse.

Who’s your hero?
Lance Armstrong, I have similar story on a smaller scale and he has achieved the sorts of things I still strive for every day.

What are you listening to on your ipod right now?
Well I’ve just come back from the U.K so I have been listening to a lot of dance music on Radio 1.  I think the biggest tracks lately have been “I’m In Miami” and “Sexy Chick”

Top 3 favorite movies:
Luck Number Slevin, Brick and V for Vendetta

Where is your favorite place to go in the world?

The darkest room around with a comfortable bed.

Cats or Dogs?
Dogs, I have a Great Dane at home.

What’s your favorite joke?
An escalator can never break: it can only become stairs. You should never see an Escalator Temporarily Out Of Order sign, just Escalator Temporarily Stairs. Sorry for the convenience.

If you were on a deserted island, who and what would you take with you?
My wife

What is your favorite food?
Sushi, I do love a spicy tuna roll

What is one thing you have always wanted to do but haven’t had a chance to do yet?
Learn another language.  I feel so rude when I go to other countries and all I can say is “Do you speak English?”
