Look Back, Look Ahead

The Week That Was:

In front of more than 4,400 fans, the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies (6-7-6) hosted the MLS-bound Portland Timbers (7-6-6) on Saturday night and treated fans to special goals by Aaron King and Ricardo Sanchez. King’s chipped goal from the infield dirt in the 26th minute cancelled out a Portland goal scored by Bright Dike in the 16th minute.

Sanchez made his Rowdies debut in impressive style with a 57th minute free kick goal from about 30 yards out.  Sanchez was acquired from the Vancouver Whitecaps in a trade on July 20th.  The mood after Sanchez’s go-ahead goal was dampened when Takayuki Suzuki scored the equalizer for Portland in the 81st minute, rescuing a point for the visitors and ending the match in a 2-2 draw.

The Week To Come:

The Rowdies now have 11 games remaining in their inaugural regular season before the USSF D-2 playoffs begin in early October.  Following the 2-2 draw with Portland, FC Tampa Bay remains in eighth place in USSF D-2 with 24 points following Montreal, who also has 24 points but has played one more game than the Rowdies. If the season ended today, the Rowdies would make the playoffs in the eighth position due to goal differential.

A road trip to league leaders Austin Aztex (11-2-5) awaits the Rowdies, who will travel to Texas for a Saturday night kickoff.  This is the third meeting between the teams this season, with both previous games ending in exciting draws.  On May 8th in Tampa, 8,082 fans watched as Jeremy Christie scored an 86th minute penalty to produce a 2-2 tie.

In Austin just 11 days later the Rowdies and Aztex drew 3-3, thanks to a Gordon Kljestan free kick goal in the 88th minute.

Off the field, the Rowdies just unveiled a new ticket plan in time for the playoff push. Fans can purchase three-game plans for either midweek or weekend games starting at just $30.  The three-game midweek plan includes the Thursday, August 19 game against Vancouver, Wednesday, August 25 vs. Carolina and Thursday, September 16 vs. Austin. The three-game weekend plan includes the Sunday, August 29 match vs. St. Louis (new kickoff time of 6:00 p.m.), Friday, September 24 vs. Minnesota and Friday, October 1 vs. Baltimore.  Plans can be purchased by calling 888-75-ROWDIES.
