Look Back, Look Ahead

The Week That Was:

After a long 10-day break from play, the FC Tampa Bay Rowdies traveled to Rochester this past Saturday to take on the playoff-bound Rochester Rhinos. The Rowdies suffered a heartbreaking 3-0 loss to the Rhinos after not being able to find the momentum on the field and build on it.

The Rowdies seemed to have found their feet in the first 40 minutes of the match and kept the scoresheet clean until a penalty kick was awarded to Rochester in the 41st minute. Rochester’s Jonathan Greenfield took the kick and scored, giving the Rhinos a 1-0 lead and himself his first goal of the season.  Minutes later midfielder Tyler Rosenlund fed the ball to forward Isaac Kissi, who shot and scored to make the lead 2-0. Even with three subs in the second half, the Rowdies couldn’t find the back of the net but Rochester did in the 49th minute with the help of Rosenlund scoring the third goal of the night.

After this weekend, Rochester has moved into the top spot in USSF D-2 after the Austin Aztex lost to Puerto Rico.  NSC Minnesota Stars moved into sole possession of the eighth position with 31 points after their win over Montreal Impact and the Rowdies now sit in ninth place with 28 points, but have played one less game than the Stars.

The Week To Come:

The Rowdies now look to this Thursday night when they take on the Austin Aztex at home at Steinbrenner Field at 7:30 p.m. Austin secured their playoff spot back in the 20th week of play, along with the Vancouver Whitecaps, and now are trying to reclaim the number one spot from Rochester.

The Rowdies are now in a must win situation with only four matches left in regular season.  Minnesota, who has played 27 games compared to the Rowdies 26, are now securely in eighth position with 31 points. With one less game played than the Stars, the Rowdies, who have 28 points, have more chances to propel themselves ahead of the Stars. The two teams also will meet in a potentially huge match on Friday, September 24, when the Rowdies host Minnesota. The Stars take on the Carolina RailHawks this Wednesday night at home.

Prior to kickoff on Thursday, fans can enjoy Thirsty Thursday with $1 beers from 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Fans will also be treated to a celebrity game during the Anheuser Busch/Pepin halftime.  Local Bay area celebrities competing include former Tampa Bay Buccaneer Martin Gramatica, former Tampa Bay Rowdie Peter Anderson, radio personality Meredith from the MJ Morning Show on 93.3 FLZ and TV personality Charley Belcher from FOX 13. And check our Facebook page here as we unveil the rest of the celebrities leading up to the game.

College students are encouraged to come out on Thursday for "College Night."  The Rowdies are offering student discounts with tickets for $10.  Student-discount tickets can be purchased by calling 888-75-ROWDIES or e-mailing tickets@tbrowdies.com.
