Rowdies Lose 4-2 To League Leaders Austin

A wild first half that featured six goals and a red card led FC Tampa Bay Rowdies (6-8-6) to a 4-2 loss to the Austin Aztex (12-2-5) in Austin on Saturday night.  Four goals in a nine-minute span saw the Aztex jump out to a 2-0 lead only for the Rowdies to pull back even after a Long Tan goal.  Austin scored another two goals before the break to make the score 4-2 at halftime.

Aztex defender Jay Needham opened the scoring in the 16th minute after a Jamie Watson corner kick.  Just two minutes later, the Aztex lead was doubled to 2-0 after Lance Watson scored in the 18th minute.  Watson’s goal was his seventh of the season, temporarily moving him into a tie with teammate Maxwell Griffin for third in the league.

The whirlwind half continued when Aaron King was brought down in the 18-yard box by Kevin Sakuda, drawing a penalty kick for Tampa.  Ricardo Sanchez converted the penalty kick with a left footed shot in the 21st minute.  It was Sanchez’s second goal in two games since joining the Rowdies last month.

Sanchez picked up the assist on the second goal just four minutes later.  He slipped a pass through the Aztex defense and into the path of Tan.  Tan was put into a one-on-one situation with Aztex goalkeeper Miguel Gallardo and beat him to level the score at 2-2 in the 25th minute.

The Aztex were put ahead again in controversial fashion in the 35th minute when Jamie Watson found Jay Needham with a corner kick for the second time in the game.  The referee had to appeal to his linesman as it was unclear whether or not the ball had crossed the goal line before being cleared by goalkeeper Daryl Sattler.

The Rowdies hit another obstacle in the 38th minute when Tan was shown a straight red card for a challenge near midfield.  The Rowdies were reduced to 10 men and will be without Tan due to suspension on Wednesday in Puerto Rico.

Maxwell Griffin rounded out the scoring in first half stoppage time after getting released by a good through pass from Lawrence Olum.  Griffin put the ball past Sattler to give the Aztex their second two goal lead of the half.  Griffin’s goal was his eigth of the season, the third most by any player in the league.

Playing with a man advantage, the Aztex dominated possession and protected their lead well in the second half. Sanchez and Chad Burt had chances to score for the Rowdies in the second half but could not find the back of the net.

Due to results elsewhere in the league, the Rowdies held on to a playoff spot even with the loss.  The Montreal Impact and Rowdies were even with 24 points going into tonight’s games.  A 2-0 loss to Carolina keeps the Impact even with FC Tampa Bay.  Puerto Rico and Miami FC drew 1-1 in Bayamon, which lifted the Islanders into a three-way tie with the Impact and Rowdies for the seventh, eight and ninth spots in the league standings.  If the season ended today, the Rowdies and Islanders would qualify, while the Impact would be left out of the playoffs.

The Rowdies will now travel to Puerto Rico for a crucial Wednesday night match-up with the Islanders and then to Miami for the final match of the Coastal Cup.

Yet again, the referee and linesman win the game for the other team. Where do these people come from and why do the Rowdies keep getting stuck with them?
