Rowdies Take On Puerto Rico In Key Match

The Basics:

FC Tampa Bay Rowdies (6-8-6, 5th in USL Conference) vs. Puerto Rico Islanders (6-7-6, 6th in USL Conference)

Wednesday, August 11th, 8:05 p.m.

Juan Roman Loubriel Stadium, Bayamon, Puerto Rico

This is the fourth and final meeting between the teams in the regular season. The season series is even at 1-1-1.

Broadcast Info:

The match will be carried live on www.fctampabay.com.

What’s at Stake:

This is a crucial match for both teams.  The Islanders, Rowdies and Montreal Impact are all even on 24 points for the seventh, eighth and ninth positions in the USSF D-2 standings.  Should the Rowdies and Islanders still be even on points at the conclusion of the regular season, the first tiebreaker is head-to-head results.

Previous Meetings:

FC Tampa Bay and Puerto Rico have already met three times this year, twice in Tampa and once in Puerto Rico.  On May 29th in Tampa it was Aaron King’s 83rd minute goal that gave the Rowdies a 2-1 victory.  On June 14th in Puerto Rico, the Rowdies struggled on a waterlogged pitch.  Aaron Wheeler suffered a stress reaction in his right shin due to the field conditions and the Rowdies lost 1-0.  FC Tampa Bay logged an official protest to the United States Soccer Federation because of the dangerous playing conditions.  The Islanders and Rowdies played out a 0-0 draw on a soggy night in Tampa on July 15th.

Individual Notes:

Midfielder Long Tan will be suspended for this match because of his red card against Austin over the weekend.

Midfielder Jonny Steele should feel comfortable playing in Puerto Rico.  As a member of the Islanders, Steele was named the USL-1 MVP in 2008 and was part of the team that won the USL Championship.

Islanders forward David Foley is tied for fifth in the league with Rowdies forward Aaron King and three other players with five goals this season.  In CONCACAF Champions League play, Foley scored against the LA Galaxy as the Islanders knocked out the Galaxy 5-3 on aggregate.  Teammate Nicholas Addlery scored two goals against the Galaxy.

The Playoff Picture:

Things are tight towards the bottom of the playoff standings.  If the season ended today, the Impact would qualify in the seventh position, the Rowdies would qualify eighth and the Islanders would be left out.

Updated Injury Report:

  • Erik Ustruck out with broken leg - beginning rehab this week with playoffs still a possibility
  • Scott Buete had minor surgery and is recovering well - expected back to training within one month
  • Unavailable for this week: Gordon Kljestan (leg)
  • Questionable for this week: Aaron Wheeler (leg), Jeremy Christie (groin) and Drew Yates (ankle)

How hard is it to get a stream that works? This is garbage. I think we may have had one feed that has worked all year. If we make the playoffs and I can't see an away game I will be very angry.
